The 25th Anniversary Conch Republic Independence Celebration will be held Friday, April 20 thru Sunday, April 29. This Key West tradition celebrates the events surrounding Key West's independence when they seceded from the Union in 1982. Well, sort of. In early spring of that year, the US Border Patrol erected a blockade on US Highway 1 at Florida City in an effort to keep out illegal immigrants. The mayor read a proclamation of secession, and then surrendered to the US Admiral in charge of the Key West naval base and demanded $1 billion in foreign aid to rebuild the Republic! The Federal Government, never actually acknowledged the secession. Whatever the case, it is another excuse to have a party, and they celebrate their Independence in true Key West fashion.
